?Types of Artificial Intelligence: An In-Depth Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer that fantasy in novels anymore. It's already incorporated into our everyday lives be it voice assistants such as Siri and Alexa, driverless cars, or health robots. AI is not singular, however. AI is a broad field with various types that vary in capability, purpose, and applications in the real world.

? Classification Based on Ability Meaning

AI can be classified into different types depending upon its level of intelligence in relation to human intelligence.

Firstly: Narrow AI (Weak AI)
It is the most commonly utilized form of AI till date. Narrow AI is intended to do a specific job or a limited set of jobs. It works based on given rules and cannot work outside its defined realm.

Examples are:

Voice assistants like Google Assistant or Alexa

Facial recognition software

Chatbots such as ChatGPT

Recommendation engines on retail web sites

Narrow AI is not aware and does not possess self-consciousness. It can only perform a limited number of things in a pre-determined context as per what it has been trained for.

Secondly: General AI (Strong AI)

General AI would be the equivalent of AI which thinks, learns, and knows the way humans think. It would be able to perform any intellectual task that is capable of being carried out by a human.

This form of AI has not yet been developed but is merely something that scientists and researchers dream up.
It would be capable of thinking, generating new solutions, and making decisions in any field, much the same way a human person would.

Thirdly: Super AI (Artificial Superintelligence)

Super AI is a hypothetical form of AI that would be superior to human intelligence in all possible domains from creativity to logic, emotional intelligence, and decision-making.

It only exists in theory at present and is a highly sensitive field of ethical and philosophical debate.
It is considered by some specialists as being a potential existential threat if it is not contained.
Classification By Functionality
AI can also be categorized according to how it behaves and functions towards its surroundings.

Firstly: Reactive Machines

These are the simplest types of AI. They do not learn or memorize from experience They only react to input in real time.

Example: Alexa, a voice-controlled virtual assistant created by Amazon.

Secondly: Limited Memory AI

This type of AI can make decisions on the basis of history. It is used extensively where there is a requirement for real-time decision-making and ongoing learning.

Example: Autonomous cars that use past driving data, road markings, and current inputs to drive safely.

Thirdly: Theory of Mind AI

This is a highly advanced idea in which AI systems would come to an understanding of human feelings, beliefs, goals, and social cues. While there has been some research on this topic, no AI like this has yet been developed.

Fourthly: Self-aware AI

This is the most advanced and theoretical type of AI. It would be capable of having self-awareness and knowing it exists. This type of AI only theoretically exists to this date and
remains a topic in science fiction.

✅ Conclusion
Artificial Intelligence comes in forms and levels, each with their capabilities and applications. We currently are in the period of Narrow AI, where computers assist us with detailed, well-defined tasks. However, an aspiration for General AI continues, and debate over Super AI continues both among technologists and ethicists.

As AI advances, it brings tremendous potential and challenging questions. Having an understanding of the kinds of AI prepares us to make decisions on how to use it responsibly—how to make it enhance and support human life instead of displacing it.it.
